Penjelasannya

Transkrip video (English)

History books love to joke that the Dutch traded away Manhattan for a tiny, remote speck of rock in Indonesia.

What they forget to mention is: in 1667, the Dutch celebrated it as the deal of the century.

Back then, New Amsterdam, modern Manhattan, was just a muddy fur-trading outpost of fifteen hundred settlers.

Meanwhile, Pulau Run was a two-mile-long island in Maluku with something far more valuable: nutmeg.

In the 1667 Treaty of Breda, Britain kept Manhattan, and the Netherlands secured Run.

That tiny island gave the Dutch complete global monopoly over the most profitable spice on Earth.

Today Manhattan is the financial capital of the planet. But in 1667? The Dutch thought they won.
