Why is palm oil in everything?

Sampul short: Why is palm oil in everything?

Penjelasannya

Transkrip video (English)

Walk down any supermarket aisle: half of everything you see contains palm oil. From chocolate and instant noodles to soap and lipstick.

Why is modern industry so completely obsessed with this one plant?

First, the chemistry: palm oil has a unique molecular balance of saturated and unsaturated fats.

That makes it naturally semi-solid at room temperature, odorless, and perfectly creamy without dangerous artificial trans-fats.

Second, the biology: oil palm is an agricultural freak of nature.

One hectare of palm produces up to eight times more oil than soybeans or sunflowers on the exact same plot of land.

Replacing it with other vegetable oils would require four to eight times more farmland across the planet.
