Kisah roket pertama India: dimulai dari sebuah gereja

India's first rocket launch story: it started in a church

Penjelasannya

Tahun 1963, program antariksa India tidak punya landasan peluncuran, hanggar, apalagi kantor. Para ilmuwannya lalu meminjam sebuah gereja di Thumba, desa nelayan di Kerala.

Kenapa Thumba?

Transkrip video (English)

In 1963, India's space program had no launch pad, no hangar and no office.

So the scientists borrowed a church in Thumba, a fishing village in Kerala.

Why Thumba? It sits almost on Earth's magnetic equator, perfect for studying electric currents in the upper atmosphere.

The local church agreed to move, and its prayer hall became the first office.

Famous photos show rocket parts carried by bicycle and bullock cart.

On November 21, 1963, a small American-made rocket lifted off from the coconut grove next door.

Sixty years later, India landed on the Moon. That church is now a space museum.
