GeeGit Explains · Uang & Ekonomi

Why can't we just print more money?

Transkrip video (English)

If poverty is simply a lack of money, why can't governments just run the printing presses and make everyone rich?

Because paper money is not wealth. Money is merely a claim check on real goods and services.

If you double the amount of paper dollars in circulation without producing an extra grain of rice, nothing new was created.

Now you just have twice as much paper chasing the exact same amount of food. Prices simply double.

When governments ignore this, disaster follows: in 1923 Germany, a loaf of bread cost two hundred billion marks.

In 2008 Zimbabwe, one-hundred-trillion-dollar bills couldn't buy a bus ticket because prices doubled every twenty-four hours.

Printing money doesn't create wealth. It only destroys the value of the money you already worked for.
