Sorong Travel Guide

The largest city in Southwest Papua and its provincial capital, at the western tip of Papua’s Bird’s Head. Once an oil town, it is now best known as the way into Raja Ampat. Before crossing, its beaches, a historic island and papeda cooking are worth a stop.

Why Go to Sorong

Sorong grew under the Dutch as an oil-company town, and the nickname Oil City still sticks. Doom Island off the city was briefly the colonial administrative centre before activity moved to the mainland.

For most travellers Sorong is a transit stop: land at the airport, stay a night, then take a fast boat to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat regency. Raja Ampat is known worldwide as one of the places with the richest coral reef diversity on earth.

Since 2022 Sorong has been the capital of the new province of Southwest Papua. The city is busy, hilly and faces the sea, with fish markets that show off the wealth of the surrounding waters.

  • Fast boats to Raja Ampat from the city port
  • Doom Island, the former Dutch administrative centre
  • Tanjung Kasuari Beach for swimming and sunset
  • Papeda with yellow-broth fish
  • Fish markets and seafood along the shore

Getting There

Domine Eduard Osok Airport has flights from Jakarta (usually via Makassar or Manado), Makassar, Manado and other Papuan cities. Pelni ships also call at Sorong. Fast boats to Waisai leave from the city harbour several times a day.

Getting Around

Taxis, motorbike taxis and minibuses run in the city. Many Raja Ampat homestays arrange pickup from the airport to the harbour.

Practical Tips

  • Try to reach Sorong in the morning or midday so you can cross to Waisai the same day.
  • Carry enough cash before Raja Ampat; ATMs on the islands are scarce.
  • Ask a doctor about malaria prevention before travelling to Papua, and use insect repellent.
  • Respect customary rules and seasonal bans (sasi) in coastal villages.
  • Never stand on or touch coral when snorkelling.

🧭 About the City

Most people fly to Sorong to go to Raja Ampat. One usually must transit in Sorong, and most people take an early flight so they can catch the ferry to Waisai (see below).

✈️ Getting There

There are some roads into Sorong from nearby villages, but in practice the only ways to get into the city are by plane or by ferry. By plane: 1 Dominique Edward Osok Airport (SOQ IATA) (1 km (0.62 mi) south of the city centre and about 3 km (1.9 mi) east of the ferry port). There are daily flights from Jakarta, as well as from the major cities of Eastern Indonesia including Makassar, Manado, Ambon and Jayapura. (updated Aug 2026) This airport is difficult to fly to directly, usually requiring two or three connections. Note that if flying in from Bali, the “direct” Denpasar–Sorong route is rerouted via Jakarta most of the time as of 2026, regardless of what the booking websites say. By ferry: There are 10 weekly ferries between the Sorong ferry port 2 Pelabuhan Rakyat (People's Port, to distinguish it from the container port) and Waisai, the district capital of Raja Ampat. From Sorong to Waisai, daily ferries depart at 14:00, with in addition ferries at 9:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. From Waisai to Sorong, ferries depart daily (except Saturday) at 14:00, with additional ferries at 11:00 on Mondays, 9:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays, and 12:00 on Saturdays. The journey time is about 2 hours. In addition to the frequent ferries to and from Waisai, Sorong's ferry port is part of the national PELNI ferry network. There are weekly ferries (at irregular times) in westerly (to Fakfak and further to Maluku and Sulawesi) and easterly (to Manokwari and further to Biak and/or Jayapura) directions. An example price as of mid-2026 is Rp 700,000 from Makkasar. Virtually all destinations along the PELNI ferry routes can be reached much more easily by plane.
