Banyuwangi Travel Guide

A regency at the eastern tip of Java, directly across from Bali via the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry. The base for climbing Kawah Ijen with its acid-blue lake and blue fire, the Baluran savanna, the surf at Red Island and G-Land, and the Osing villages. Once the seat of Blambangan, Java's last Hindu kingdom.

What to See in Banyuwangi

• Pos Paltuding, ~1,5 jam dari kota Kawah Ijen An active sulphur crater at ~2,400 m holding the world's most acidic crater lake in deep turquoise. Before dawn, leaking sulphur gas ignites blue in the darkness — the ‘blue fire’. Traditional miners carry blocks of cooled sulphur up from the crater floor. Foreign-visitor entry ~Rp100,000–150,000 (more at weekends); gas-mask rental ~Rp50,000. Bring warm layers, a headtorch and water. Check the volcano status — it can be closed.
• ~35 km utara kota, arah Situbondo Taman Nasional Baluran A savanna, forest and coastal national park nicknamed the ‘Africa of Java’. The Bekol grassland holds wild banteng, deer, buffalo and peafowl; Bama beach at its edge is white-sand and quiet.
• Pesanggaran, ~2,5–3 jam dari kota Pantai Pulau Merah A brown-sand beach with a small green hillock offshore that can be walked to at low tide. Moderate waves suited to learning to surf; boards for hire and warungs on the sand.
• Semenanjung Blambangan, tenggara G-Land (Plengkung), Taman Nasional Alas Purwo A world-class long left-hand wave inside the most intact lowland forest left on Java. Most surfers arrive on boat packages from Bali; the independent land route runs via Benculuk then Grajagan and is long.
• Pesisir utara, ~30 menit dari kota Bangsring Underwater A semi-artificial reef-conservation area with dense fish life and a very cheap entry fee. The boat departure point for white-sand Tabuhan island.
• Kecamatan Glagah, di rute menuju Ijen Desa Adat Kemiren A village of the Osing — Banyuwangi's indigenous people, descendants of the Blambangan kingdom — with traditional timber houses, its own coffee, and Gandrung dance and hadrah music at ceremonies.
• Pantai selatan, akses 4WD Sukamade (Taman Nasional Meru Betiri) A protected turtle-nesting beach. The road is rough — river crossings by 4WD — and a visit usually means an overnight to watch turtles nest at night.

Getting There

Banyuwangi airport (BWX) at Blimbingsari — whose terminal won the 2022 Aga Khan Award for Architecture — has flights from Jakarta and Surabaya, sometimes Kuala Lumpur. Trains from Surabaya and Malang take ~6 hrs, from Yogyakarta ~13 hrs, stopping at Ketapang station (by the ferry) or Banyuwangi Kota (the centre). The Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry crosses to Bali around the clock, every ~30 min, about 45 minutes.

Getting Around

For Ijen, hire a car or jeep with driver for the day — book a day ahead through your lodging. Gojek/Grab work in town. Bemos and becaks run but the fares need hard bargaining (drivers often ask 2–3 times the rate). The southern sites (Alas Purwo, Sukamade) need a 4WD.

Practical Tips

• Ijen: leave at 01:00–02:00, bring a jacket, headtorch, water, and rent a gas mask at the post.
• Check the Ijen volcano status before you go — the climb closes when activity rises.
• Book the Ijen transport a day ahead; don't count on finding a vehicle in the small hours.
• Bargain hard for bemo/becak fares, or use Gojek/Grab where the price is fixed.
• The sites are far apart. Baluran, Alas Purwo and Sukamade are each a full day — don't try to combine them.
