Bagaimana Roket Terbang?
How Does a Rocket Fly?
A rocket doesn’t push on the air; it pushes on its own exhaust. From balloons and water rockets to fins, nozzles and multistage rockets, plus the story of Kartika I, the first sounding rocket launched in Indonesia, in 1964.
1. Pertanyaan
Halo, aku Mr. Peo!
Hello, I'm Mr. Peo! Today's big question: how does a rocket fly?
And here's the strange part. In space, there's no air at all. So what is a rocket pushing against?
2. Balon
Let's start with a balloon. Blow it up... and let go!
The air rushes out the back, and the balloon shoots forward. Push something one way, and it pushes you back the other way.
That's Newton's third law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
3. Di luar angkasa
Roket mendorong gas buangnya sendiri, bukan mendorong udara
A rocket works the same way. It doesn't push against the air. It pushes against its own exhaust, throwing hot gas out the back, very, very fast.
That's why rockets work in space. In fact, without air slowing them down, they work even better.
4. Roket air
You can see this with a water rocket. Pump air into a plastic bottle with some water inside...
...release it, and the pressure blasts the water out the bottom. The bottle shoots up the other way.
In our simulation, all the water is gone in about a third of a second. After that, the rocket just coasts.
5. Berapa banyak air
Air sedikit: hanya sekitar tiga belas meter. Hampir penuh: sekitar dua puluh. Tapi kira-kira setengah botol: sekitar lima puluh lima meter!
So how much water should you use? Let's test it in our simulation, with a one-and-a-half-liter bottle at five bar.
A little water: only about thirteen meters. Almost full: about twenty. But around half full: about fifty-five meters!
Too little water, and there's not much to push. Too much, and the rocket is heavy and runs out of pressure. Rocket science is all about balance.
6. Sirip
Stabil bila titik tekan berada di belakang titik berat
Nah, kenapa roket punya sirip? Lihat apa yang terjadi tanpa sirip.
Sirip memindahkan titik tempat udara mendorong roket, namanya titik tekan, ke belakang titik beratnya. Maka roket terbang lurus, seperti anak panah.
Now, why do rockets have fins? Watch what happens without them.
Fins move the point where the air pushes on the rocket, called the center of pressure, behind its center of mass. Then the rocket flies straight, like an arrow.
7. Nozel
Real rockets burn fuel to make hot gas, and the gas leaves through a nozzle.
The nozzle gets narrow, then wide again, like an hourglass. This shape lets the gas speed up past the speed of sound, and faster gas means a stronger push.
8. Bertingkat
Roket bertingkat · buang tangki kosong, terus bertambah cepat
Jadi roket besar dibuat bertingkat.
A rocket also gets lighter as it burns fuel. And empty tanks are just dead weight.
So big rockets are built in stages. When a stage is empty, it drops away, and the rest keeps going, lighter and faster.
9. Roket Indonesia
Kartika I · 14 Agustus 1964 · Pameungpeuk, Jawa Barat
Indonesia punya kisah roketnya sendiri.
Indonesia has its own rocket story. On the fourteenth of August, 1964, the Kartika One rocket launched from Pameungpeuk, in West Java.
It was the first scientific rocket ever launched in Indonesia.
10. Coba sendiri

Mau mencoba roket air?
Want to try a water rocket? Use only plastic soda bottles, never glass, and ask an adult to help.
Use a pump with a pressure gauge, stand back when you launch, and never aim it at anyone.
Or try it first in Lab Roket Air, our free rocket game at geegit dot id.
