1. Doa seorang janda

Dahulu kala, di tepi hutan di Jawa Tengah, hiduplah seorang janda bernama Mbok Sirni.

Gubuknya kecil. Sawahnya kecil.

Setiap malam, ia berdoa memohon seorang anak.

Long ago, at the edge of a forest in Central Java, there lived a widow named Mbok Sirni.

Her hut was small. Her rice field was small. But the heaviest thing she carried was the silence in her home.

Mbok Sirni: “If only I had a child... someone to love, someone to share my days with.”

Every night, she prayed for a child.

2. Buto Ijo datang

Suatu petang, tanah mulai bergetar.

Buto Ijo: “Aku mendengar doamu, perempuan tua. Aku bisa memberimu seorang anak.”

Mbok Sirni: “Si... siapa kau?”

Buto Ijo: “Aku Buto Ijo. Tanamlah biji ini, dan seorang anak akan jadi milikmu. Tapi saat ia berumur tujuh belas tahun, kau harus menyerahkannya padaku... untuk kumakan!”

Mbok Sirni takut. Tapi kerinduannya lebih besar daripada rasa takutnya.

Mbok Sirni: “A... aku berjanji.”

One evening, the ground began to shake.

Buto Ijo: “I heard your prayer, old woman. I can give you a child.”

Mbok Sirni: “Who... who are you?”

Buto Ijo: “I am Buto Ijo. Plant this seed, and a child will be yours. But when she turns seventeen, you will give her back to me... to eat!”

Mbok Sirni was afraid. But her longing was stronger than her fear.

Mbok Sirni: “I... I promise.”

3. Timun emas

Mbok Sirni: “Anak perempuan... anakku sendiri. Kunamai kau Timun Mas. Timun Emas.”

She planted the seed. Within days, a vine crept across her garden, and on it grew a single cucumber, shining like gold.

When she cut it open, she could hardly believe her eyes. Inside was a baby girl.

Mbok Sirni: “A daughter... my own daughter. I will call you Timun Mas. The Golden Cucumber.”

4. Timun Mas tumbuh

Timun Mas grew into a kind, clever and hardworking girl.

Timun Mas: “Mother, look! I caught a fish all by myself!”

She helped in the rice field, carried water from the river, and made her mother laugh every single day.

But every year, Mbok Sirni's smile grew a little sadder. Because seventeen was coming.

5. Buto Ijo menagih janji

Buto Ijo: “Mbok Sirni! Sudah waktunya. Mana anak itu?”

Mbok Sirni: “Tolonglah, ia masih kecil dan kurus. Datanglah dua tahun lagi. Ia akan lebih besar... lebih mengenyangkan untukmu.”

Buto Ijo: “Hmm... Dua tahun. Tidak lebih satu hari pun!”

Buto Ijo: “Mbok Sirni! It is time. Where is the girl?”

Mbok Sirni: “Please, she is still so small and thin. Come back in two years. She will be bigger then... a better meal for you.”

Buto Ijo: “Hmm... Two years. Not one day more!”

6. Pertapa Gunung Gundul

Mbok Sirni tak bisa tidur. Sebelum fajar, ia mendaki Gunung Gundul, tempat seorang pertapa tua yang bijaksana tinggal.

Pertapa: “Aku tahu mengapa kau datang. Ambillah empat kantong kecil ini.”

Pertapa: “Biji timun. Jarum. Garam. Dan terasi. Saat raksasa itu datang, suruh putrimu berlari, dan lemparkan semua ini ke belakangnya, satu per satu.”

Mbok Sirni could not sleep. Before dawn, she climbed Mount Gundul, where a wise old hermit lived.

The Hermit: “I know why you have come. Take these four little bags.”

The Hermit: “Cucumber seeds. Needles. Salt. And terasi, shrimp paste. When the giant comes, let your daughter run, and throw these behind her, one by one.”

7. Rahasia ibu

Mbok Sirni: “Timun Mas, my child... there is something I have never told you.”

Timun Mas: “Whatever it is, Mother, we will face it together.”

8. Lari!

Buto Ijo: “Timun Maaas!”

Mbok Sirni: “Lari, Nak! Lari!”

Timun Mas berlari ke dalam hutan. Di belakangnya, langkah raksasa mengguncang pepohonan.

Buto Ijo: “Timun Maaas!”

Mbok Sirni: “Run, my child! Run!”

Timun Mas ran into the forest. Behind her, the giant's footsteps shook the trees.

9. Kantong 1: biji timun

Ia melempar kantong pertama, biji timun. Seketika, seladang timun menyembul dari tanah.

Buto Ijo: “Timun! Mmm... sedikit saja...”

Raksasa yang rakus itu berhenti untuk makan. Tapi tak lama, ia kembali mengejar.

She threw the first bag, the cucumber seeds. In an instant, a whole field of cucumbers burst from the ground.

Buto Ijo: “Cucumbers! Mmm... just a few...”

The greedy giant stopped to eat. But soon, he was chasing her again.

10. Kantong 2: jarum

Ia melempar jarum.

She threw the needles. They shot up into a forest of sharp bamboo.

Buto Ijo: “Argh! Ow! Ouch!”

Scratched all over, the giant tore his way through. He would not stop.

11. Kantong 3: garam

Ia melempar garam.

She threw the salt. The ground fell away into a wide, rolling sea.

Buto Ijo: “You cannot escape me!”

The giant swam, and swam, and swam.

12. Kantong 4: terasi

Timun Mas tinggal punya satu kantong.

Timun Mas had one bag left. With all her strength, she threw the terasi.

The sea became a lake of hot, bubbling mud.

Buto Ijo: “No... no! Help me!”

The mud pulled him down, deeper and deeper, until Buto Ijo was gone forever.

13. Pulang

Timun Mas: “Ibu! Ibu, aku pulang!”

Mbok Sirni: “Anakku... kau selamat. Kau selamat.”

Timun Mas: “Mother! Mother, I'm home!”

Mbok Sirni: “My child... you are safe. You are safe.”

From that day on, Timun Mas and her mother lived in peace, saved by courage, quick wits, and four little bags.
